Kids aren’t the only ones who are allowed to dream of castles. In fact, the one that they know best (hint: it can be found at Disney) isn’t even the most beautiful. Some of the world’s most legendary castles are found in Europe. While some of the castles still house monarchs that belong to a long line of royalty, others serve as popular tourist attractions or museums. The Neuschwanstein Castle in Munich, Germany was intended as a personal refuge for a reclusive king, but it was opened to the paying public right after his death in 1886. Today, more than 1.3 million people visit annually and it said to be the inspiration for Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle.
Mont-Saint-Michel is a rocky islet topped by a famous Gothic abbey. The abbey served as a prison during Napoleon I’s reign and is now preserved as a national historical monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Home to the Bohemian Crown Jewels, Prague Castle is also where the Kings of Bohemia, Holy Roman Emperors and presidents of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic have had their offices. According to the Guinness Book oof World Records, it is one of the biggest castles in the world.
Le Chateau de Chambord (also seen in main image) was built in 1547, and has remained the the finest samples of the Renaissance architecture in France. As the former retreat of some of the most powerful French Kings – including Louis XIV – it’s filled with legends of royalty at every turn.
